Minnesota Public Radio reports that renovations are underway on Union Depot in St. Paul.
Envisioned by its supporters as an intermodal hub, the renovated Union Depot will connect a new light rail system (currently under construction) with local and intercity bus service, Amtrak's Empire Builder, and future high-speed rail service to and from Chicago.
Some Minnesota Republicans have balked at the $243 million price tag associated with the project. The award of federal funds to complement state and local dollars was celebrated with great fanfare by Pelosi in 2010, but the subsequent high-speed rail funding quagmire has likely doomed any hope in the immediate future for new rail service to the Twin Cities.
