Lawrence, Kansas, a stop on the route of Amtrak's Southwest Chief, recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open a new $1.5 million, wheelchair-accessible outdoor platform. Funded by federal dollars, the new platform was a step in the right direction for local advocacy group Depot Redux, which is dedicated to restoring the 1956 Santa Fe station. The group ultimately hopes to purchase it from its current owner, the BNSF railway, and develop it into an intermodal transportation hub for the community.
The new platform features a refurbished neon sign identifying the city as well as a new 'Amtrak' neon sign. This keeps with historical precedent, as the Santa Fe railroad commonly used neon to light up up their station signs.
